Eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty)

It is the surgery of the upper and/or lower eyelids, through which, skin, muscle and/or fatty tissue can be eliminated. The purpose of this procedure is to rejuvenate the eyelids by means of remodelling the skin surrounding the eyes (periocular tissue) and restore a more natural and youthful look, keeping the person’s features intact and avoiding visible scars and protecting the ocular health.

Blepharoplasty is suggested to eliminate the excess skin that creates creases or distorts the shape of the eyelids and can sometimes interfere with good vision. Likewise, it corrects the fat deposits that make the upper eyelids look swollen. A typical case is the “bags” under the lower eyelids. With a blepharoplasty, patients regain a youthful look “turning the hands of the clock back 5 years”,at least.

How do you perform a blepharoplasty?

  • The incisions (where you cut) remain hidden and practically invisible after 3 months. In the case of the lower eyelids, lenghtwise right after the eyelashes; and in the upper eyelids, it is placed on the groove created when you open your eyes. It can be done under local anesthesia, in the clinic. The stitches can be taken out between 3 and 5 days.

  • The upper eyelid surgery rarely leaves bruises, however the lower eyelid surgery, quite frequently does. These will disappear within a period of 8-10 days.
  • Take the precaution of having cold compresses since the day of your surgery. Likewise, bags of ice and cold water to place on your eyes; wet rags with cold water and compresses will help you reduce the swelling. That should be done during the first 3 days.
